How to Keep Your Mixer and Tools Clean?

Cleaning Resin Installation Equipment

1. Forced Action Mixers

Regular cleaning prevents resin build-up, ensuring consistent mixes and extending the mixer’s life.

Steps:

  • Initial Cleaning:
    • After each use, add 1–2 bags of dry aggregate to the mixer.
    • Run the mixer briefly to loosen residual resin.
    • Add white spirit or xylene to dissolve remaining resin.
    • Discharge the mixture into a container for safe disposal.
  • Detailed Cleaning:
    • Remove the mixer head and paddles.
    • Use a wire brush and white spirit or xylene to clean the interior surfaces.
    • For stubborn, cured resin, apply heat using a hot-air gun or blowtorch, then scrape off the softened material.
    • Wipe down all parts with a clean cloth to remove any residue.

Safety Tip: Always clean in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and safety goggles.

2. Paddle Mixers

To maintain the performance of paddle mixers:

  • After each use, place the paddle in a bucket of dry aggregate to loosen residual resin.
  • Add white spirit or xylene to the aggregate and continue mixing to clean thoroughly.
  • Wipe off any remaining residue with a clean cloth.
  • Allow the paddle to air dry completely before storage.

3. Hand Tools (Trowels, Spazzles, Rakes)

Proper cleaning ensures smooth finishes and prevents contamination between mixes:

  • During installation, use a trowel cleaner like Glide & Shine to keep tools lubricated and clean.
  • After each project, remove resin residue with white spirit or xylene.
  • For persistent cured resin, apply light heat with a hot-air gun or blowtorch, then carefully scrape off the softened resin.
  • Wipe tools with a clean cloth and allow them to air dry before storage.

Note: Avoid using abrasive materials that can damage the tools.

4. General Tips

  • Avoid Water-Based Cleaners: Water can impede resin curing and may cause issues with future mixes.
  • Regular Maintenance: Incorporate cleaning into your routine to prevent resin build-up and ensure consistent results.
  • Proper Disposal: Dispose of resin-contaminated materials responsibly, following local regulations.
